Rep. Chris Smith (R-Manchester) today issued a statement on the passing of Rep. Donald Payne, Jr. of Newark, expressing his condolences and honoring Payne's legacy.

Smith described Payne as a dedicated public servant who followed in his father's footsteps, working tirelessly to improve the lives of New Jersey families. He highlighted Payne's compassion for those in need, stating, "Donald Payne Jr., like his father before him, was a dedicated public servant who worked to improve the lives of New Jersey families. He was a compassionate legislator who cared deeply for people in need."

In addition to his commitment to serving the community, Smith acknowledged Payne's significant contributions in the legislative arena. He noted Payne's leadership role as Chairman of the House Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials Subcommittee, where he played a key part in enhancing the country's transportation infrastructure.

Smith also expressed pride in collaborating with Payne on important initiatives, such as the Payment Choice Act and the Amputation Reduction and Compassion (ARC) Act. He stated, "I was proud to work with him on his Payment Choice Act that would ensure retail stores accept cash—which is the only available payment option for millions of Americans—as well as his Amputation Reduction and Compassion (ARC) Act, which would provide full coverage for peripheral artery screening tests for patients at risk of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) to help reduce PAD-related amputations."

In closing, Smith, along with his wife Marie, extended their gratitude for Payne's public service and offered their prayers and deepest condolences to Payne's family, friends, and loved ones. Smith's statement reflects the respect and admiration he held for Rep. Donald Payne Jr. and the impact he made during his time in public office.
