In response to Rutgers University's handling of the demands made by protesters, Rep. Chris Smith (R-Manchester) has strongly criticized the institution for potentially capitulating to antisemitic, anti-Israel, pro-Hamas sentiments. Smith questioned whether the university's response to the protesters' demands amounted to appeasement.

Smith expressed his dismay, stating, “Any capitulation whatsoever to antisemitic, anti-Israel, pro-Hamas protesters is absolutely disgraceful.” He further emphasized the importance of combating antisemitic threats on campus rather than rewarding hatred towards Jews and Israel.

The congressman's concerns were fueled by the protesters' demands, which included calls for Rutgers to divest from firms supporting Israel, terminate partnerships with institutions in Israel, provide scholarships to Gazan students using taxpayer funds, and acknowledge genocide against Palestinians.

Smith highlighted the disruptive nature of the protesters, noting that their encampment led to the disturbance of 28 exams and affected over 1,000 students. He urged Rutgers to prioritize the safety and well-being of Jewish students in the face of escalating antisemitic threats.

Furthermore, Smith raised alarm over Congress's ongoing investigation into Rutgers' history of antisemitism and its failure to protect Jewish students. He vowed to hold university leaders accountable and ensure that appropriate action is taken to address the pervasive antisemitic sentiments on campus.

The congressman also reiterated his stance on Hamas, labeling the organization as a terrorist group responsible for violence against Jews and seeking the destruction of Israel. He urged individuals to remember the atrocities committed by Hamas and emphasized the need to confront such extremist ideologies.

Smith's criticisms reflect a broader concern over the rise of antisemitism and anti-Israel sentiments, calling for institutions like Rutgers to uphold principles of inclusivity and security for all students.
