Mayor Peggy Sue Juliano announced the receipt of a $6,000,000 Congressional District Spending Grant for the completion of the Railroad Avenue Extension in Lacey Township. She expressed her gratitude to Congressman Chris Smith for securing the funds and emphasized the project's importance for alleviating traffic congestion on Route 9. Juliano credited several individuals for initiating discussions to address the traffic issues, including her late husband, former Mayor Nick Juliano, Committeeman Mark Dykoff, and Ocean County Commissioner Gary Quinn.

Describing the project as a beneficial addition for the community, Juliano stated, "I call it like a little scoop around that makes it easier to get to the stores from another direction. There's a great walking path and biking path that will also be great."

The extension of Railroad Avenue will involve the construction of a new two-lane limited access road parallel to Route 9, connecting various key points in the area. The project will also include the Barnegat Branch Rail Trail, contributing to the development of the Ocean County Barnegat Bay Trail. Rep. Smith highlighted the significance of the extension, stating, "The extension of Railroad Avenue will not only ease the flow of traffic within Lacey Township but will also improve safety conditions for drivers, passengers, and pedestrians alike."

The project, estimated at $6,119,345, will address drainage issues in the area through the implementation of various infrastructure improvements. Township Administrator Veronica Laureigh played a key role in advocating for the project and encouraging the governing body to apply for funding. The completion of the road is expected to resemble McKinley Boulevard in Manahawkin, with a speed limit of 30 mph as per the initial permit.

Lacey Township's ownership of the railroad right-of-way distinguishes it from other municipalities along the Barnegat Branch Rail Trail. The township acquired rights to the property in 1994 and has maintained control over it, unlike neighboring towns where the land is owned by Ocean County. The authorities are awaiting information on the availability of funds to establish a timeline for the project's completion.

The article, published on April 12, 2024, highlights the positive impact of the grant in addressing traffic congestion on Route 9 and improving transportation infrastructure in Lacey Township.
